99.9% of cars and trucks and RV.s can be opened mechanically. A Beach Locksmith has the tools and know-how and experience to get you into your vehicle quickly and safely, without damage. Mechanical opening is most commonly carried out by wedging the door of the vehicle with an inflation device, and inserting one of a variety of long-reach tools which activate a button, pull a handle, grab a key, or lift a button. Sometimes, opening is accomplished by picking, activating latches, or windows, but in most cases, air wedging is the preferred method.
You need not be locked out! Ever! Immediately make extra keys, putting one in your wallet (if you carry a wallet) or one in a key box under the bumper, or a key wrapped in tape and wedged under the wheel well.
Residential lockouts are as varied as the locks one encounters. Some knobs, levers and deadbolts can be opened by mechanically pressing back the latches and bolts. Yes, credit cards do work on some latches where the dead latch is not activated. If the strike plate is sufficiently far forward, the door can be pressed inward so that the dead latch on a knob or lever extends into the strike plate. Then the latch can be simply pushed back (if it is exposed) using a flat-faced screwdriver. In some cases, latches can offer fairly good security, but for the most part, they are really meant to hold the door in place so that the deadbolt can be thrown effortlessly. Deadbolts, when fully extended, lock into place, and offer much better security than a knob or lever.
On locks which have keys and which contain pins, the general way of opening is by picking. First the lock is well lubricated (W.D. 40) and then the pins are raked or bounced, while a small amount of rotational pressure is applied to the cylinder using some form of tension wrench. When the internal pins line up on the surface of the cylinder they form a sheer-line, and with that bit of rotational pressure being brought to bear by the tension wrench, the cylinder turns. It it turns in the correct direction, the lock will open, just as it does with a key. If it turns in the opposite direction, then the cylinder is spun past the locking point using a plug spinner. Not all pinned locks are pickable. The greatest impediment to successful picking here in S.W. Florida is simple corrosion. Moisture and salt conspire to corrode both pins and cylinders, so that the pins cannot move, preventing picking. When this happens, other points of entry must be explored, and if this fails, the lock must be drilled. Those other points of entry are any and all doors with locks, windows, and sliding glass doors. Not all window and sliding glass door locks are created equal. Some can be manipulated, some are rather invincible.
Lockouts for businesses, as with residences, generally involve picking. The principles are the same, but here the locks are not lighter-weight knobs and deadbolts, but rather mortise cylinders activating adams-rite latches on glass doors, or heavier duty, commercial grade levers and deadbolts on office doors. In a majority of cases these locks can be picked. If not, they are readily drillable. A Beach Locksmith carries a large inventory of residential and commercial locks for those cases where drilling is a must, and immediate replacement to the original key is imperative.
